As a developing economy, South Africa has a pressing need for individuals who are equipped with sound financial skills and an ability to think laterally. Our Wits accountancy graduates will possess a strong problem-solving ability; critical thinking and a qualification from a world-leading educational institution which will provide for a distinct competitive career advantage.
The Wits School of accountancy has a track record for producing some of the finest financial minds within our global economy. The School consistently produces some of the top performers in the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and Independent Regulatory Board of Auditors (IRBA) Qualifying Examinations, the recent results released bears testimony to this statement whereby it is noted that Wits achieved above average pass rates for both SIACA and IRBA.
The School of Accountancy recognises the importance of ongoing research to maintaining its leadership position in the industry and is therefore a research intensive University. Research contributes to new knowledge and the application of existing knowledge to new circumstances – it strengthens our teaching and ensures that our students have access to the latest and most relevant thinking in the field of accountancy.
We aspire to be a rising research star in the firmament of schools of accountancy in South Africa. An active research programme is in place through which staff interacts with large audit and financial enterprises to produce insightful, relevant research that makes a meaningful contribution to the field.
Wits Accountancy graduates dominate the top ten positions in these examinations and many go on to occupy leadership positions in the world of business – our alumni include the likes of Brian Joffe (Bidvest), David Sussman (JD Group), Sol Kerzner (Kerzner International), Ivan Glasenberg (Glencore), Vuyo Jack (Empowerdex) and Donald Gordon (Liberty Life).
We remain aware of the critical skills shortage that exists in the field of accountancy in South Africa, and our aim is to produce well-rounded accountants who have a nuanced understanding of and can excel in the complex world of business. We are a school characterised by high levels of energy and a commitment to producing critical lateral-thinkers who will make up tomorrow’s rank of business leaders.
