From 1 January 2022, many car enthusiasts had one thing on their minds, and that was the release of the fifth-generation Kia Sportage. However, we had to wait until the third quarter and let me tell you, it was worth it.
15 September 2022 was the day that the all-new Kia Sportage, Kia’s best-selling model globally, entered the South African market.
A bold front grill, striking LED headlights and state-of-the-art rims make this new Kia Sportage a sight to behold. There are five variants to choose from, starting with the LX model at R539,995 right up to the GT-Line S at R739,995. With these five variants, Kia has something to suit every budget.
Each model is powered by a 1,6-litre T-GDI engine. You will be happy to note that being a luxury family SUV, safety is a top priority in the Kia Sportage. No matter which model from these five you choose, you are guaranteed to have the following safety features: anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC), as well as hill-start assist control (HAC), downhill brake control (DBC) and trailer stability assist (TSA).
You read about the exterior improvements and the safety features, but you drive a car from the inside. So, the important question is: what does this new Kia Sportage look like on the inside and how comfortable is it?
When you set foot in the Kia Sportage, the first thing you will notice is the stunning curved 12,3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. You will feel like you took a step into the future. As your back rests comfortably against the leather seats and you wrap your hands around the well-designed and comfortable steering wheel, you are set to go.
The interior of the Kia Sportage is not just luxury all the way but also very user-friendly, as you have every button you require at your fingertips. In this fifth generation of the Kia Sportage, Kia has ensured that you get the perfect blend of touchscreen buttons and actual dials to use.
When you put your foot on the pedal and take to the road, there is no shortage of power. Even if you are driving in Eco mode you can overtake quite easily (which cannot be said about all SUVs in this segment). The automated dual-clutch transmission works seamlessly, and you reach the highest gear very quickly, thereby maintaining great fuel efficiency. You are cruising well below 2000 rpm in the highest gear, and the engine is só refined and silent − enhancing the luxurious driving experience.
With more than enough space for the rear passengers, even if they are three adults, plus a huge 591-litre boot, I would put the fifth-generation Kia Sportage among the best family SUVs currently in the market. It is futuristic in its appearance, luxurious in its drive and efficient in its fuel consumption. The Kia Sportage 2022 would make for many epic family adventures.
