December in South Africa is about coastal migrations, as inlanders from Gauteng and elsewhere make their way to the coast for some holiday beach therapy. But you’ll also find many trekking in reverse, either returning North for Christmas with family or perhaps pursuing the bush and vast veld of these wonderful lands.
The N1 is so often the protagonist, ferrying holiday makers to their destinations. This Feature then, is not about the destination, but about that which is so often missed along the N1. It’s about some interesting overnight stays en route to the destination, a handful of unique towns and accommodations that give reason to linger just a bit longer and enjoy the national road’s many surprises and sceneries before you arrive at your destination.
