Your words hold power
What we tell ourselves daily can manifest in our lives. Have you ever heard the saying ‘you become what you say’? Proverbs 18:21 says that ‘Death and life are in the power of the tongue’. It was only in my third year at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University that I realised how powerful those words are. If you are always doubting yourself or speaking negatively about the situation you are in, it will soon start to manifest in your life.
I had gone through my third year of university while working and not knowing whether I was going to make it through to honours. I said to myself: ‘If I couldn’t make it in my first or second year as I had to repeat some modules, how on earth was I going to make it through to my third year to get my degree while working?’ I had failed so many times; I had lost faith in myself and my ability to keep going. I had lost the Thuthuka bursary and did not have any funds to study going forward. It was at that pinnacle moment that I had to say to myself that I needed to get my degree no matter what it took.
The more I spoke confidence and positivity into my situation, the more I started to see a silver lining in my tests and exams as well as in my work commitments. When you start to frequently speak good things over your life, it convinces your mind to believe that good things will happen to you. This then opens your mind to the possibility of doors of opportunity amidst your struggles.
I always say the bigger the test, the greater the testimony. The more challenges we face in our determination to reach our goals, the more courage and voice we gain to motivate others around us. Speaking positivity into your own life is as important when speaking good things or kind words over someone else’s life. When you motivate someone with positive words, you will be amazed to see how their behaviour or attitude changes by the upliftment of your words.
The same can be said about the negative: if you start a new topic in your studies and you tell yourself it looks hard when you have not even gone through it properly, you have already set yourself up for failure.
Start today by saying ‘YES, I CAN!’. You may not know how you are going to overcome life’s challenges, but a good starting point is telling yourself every day that you are capable and worthy of good things. You will begin to believe this and see an amazing turnaround in your life.
