Every season is perfect for wine, but winter seems to be a particularly great time of year to open a bottle (or two). There is something about a glass of spicy red wine that warms the body and soul.
While many prefer to drink red wine during the winter the sunny afternoons during weekends are perfect to enjoy a refreshing white or rose wine.

Vriesenhof Kallista
Kallista is derived from the ancient Greek saying ‘to kalon kai to agathon’ meaning ‘the good and the noble’, and is the name chosen for the flagship blend in the Vriesenhof range of wines from Vriesenhof Vineyards in Paradyskloof, Stellenbosch.
Ideal weather conditions have resulted in a near-perfect wine, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Merlot (33%), Cabernet Franc (24%) and Malbec (8%). These varietals portray the elegance and power that the vineyards can offer in a great vintage.
This wonderful wine has an aroma of red cherries and pencil lead with beautiful flavours of leather and tobacco on the mid-palate. It has a long lingering finish with good minerality. The Kallista is a meal on its own or have it with a simple creamy cheese like brie. RRP R325
Rhino Run Cabernet Savignon
This is part of the Conservation Collection of one of South Africa’s leading family-owned wineries, Van Loveren. Each bottle contributes to the conservation of the African rhino.
The 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is a medium-bodied wine with rich plum and mint aromas followed by ripe blackcurrant, lead pencil and cigar box on the palate. Good oak ensures a soft, toasty finish.
The wine is good value for money and is a firm favourite. RRP R85.
Van Loveren Blue Velvet Pinot Noir
Ranked as the 10th most planted varietal in the world, Pinot Noir remains one of the most misunderstood wines in South Africa. But over the last 10 years or so, there has been a large shift in both the planting and production of this amazing grape in South Africa.
Made well, Pinot Noir is one of the most captivating and complex of wines. Growing this fickle, low-cropping variety is extremely challenging, even infuriating, as the thin skins are particularly sensitive to temperature fluctuation and the grapes are susceptible to sunburn, rot, fungus and mildew.
The Blue Velvet Pinot Noir shows upfront fruit flavours of raspberries and cranberries with earthy tones and cherry on the palate and aftertaste. The wine fermented slowly in open fermenters and was plunged through regularly. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was transferred with gravitation to French oak barrels for eight months. RRP R80.
