The accountancy profession is at an educational inflection point. The profession has always evolved in response to economic, regulatory, and technological change. Today, however, the pace and nature of that change are fundamentally different. Artificial intelligence (AI) is not merely automating tasks; it is reshaping how knowledge is created, accessed, and applied. For the chartered accountant (CA), this raises a critical question: ‘How do we design learning environments that support continuous professional development in a profession defined by complexity, judgement, and ethical responsibility?’
Traditional learning models − lecture-driven, content-heavy, and assessment-centric − were designed for a more stable professional landscape. In contrast, the modern CA(SA) operates in a dynamic ecosystem characterised by evolving standards, digital transformation, and heightened public accountability. AI, when thoughtfully integrated, offers an opportunity to transform professional education from a
static process into a dynamic, adaptive learning ecosystem aligned with SAICA’s competency framework and lifelong learning mandate.
FROM STATIC INSTRUCTION TO DYNAMIC LEARNING ECOSYSTEMS
Historically, accounting education has prioritised technical mastery and compliance with prescribed syllabi. While this foundation remains essential, it is no longer sufficient. The CA(SA) competency framework emphasises not only technical proficiency, but also professional judgement, ethical reasoning, digital acumen, and lifelong learning amongst other competencies that are crucial for a professional today.
AI enables a shift from ‘one-size-fits-all’ instruction to personalised and adaptive learning environments. Through learning analytics and intelligent tutoring systems, AI can identify individual learning gaps, recommend targeted resources, and provide real-time feedback. This moves learning beyond periodic examinations towards continuous competence development, where learning is embedded in daily professional practice.
For SAICA, this transformation aligns with the profession’s broader responsibility: to ensure that CAs(SA) remain relevant, reflective, and capable of responding to increasingly complex and changing contexts.
AI THROUGH THE LENS OF SOTL
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) provides a critical framework for understanding the educational implications of AI. At its core, SoTL encourages educators and professional bodies to systematically reflect on teaching practices, use evidence to improve learning, and place the learner at the centre of the educational experience.
AI strengthens SoTL in three important ways:
Evidence-informed teaching decisions − AI-driven learning analytics provide educators and training officers with granular insights into how learners engage with material. This allows for data-informed adjustments to curriculum design, pacing, and support structures.
Enhanced feedback and reflection − Timely, personalised feedback is central to effective learning. AI tools can provide immediate formative feedback, freeing educators to focus on higher-order coaching, mentoring, and professional identity formation.
Redefining the educator’s role − In AI-enabled environments, educators shift from content transmitters to learning designers and facilitators. This aligns strongly with SoTL principles and with SAICA’s emphasis on developing reflective, self-directed professionals.
Viewed through a SoTL lens, AI is not a shortcut or replacement for sound pedagogy − it is a mechanism for deepening educational quality and intentionality.
REIMAGINING CPD
Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is a cornerstone of professional competence and public trust. Yet traditional CPD models − often compliance-driven and time-based − struggle to address individual learning needs and rapidly evolving skills requirements.
AI enables a more responsive and personalised CPD ecosystem characterised by:
Diagnostic assessment of skills gaps
Tailored learning pathways aligned to career stages
Micro-learning and modular credentialing
Just-in-time learning embedded in professional workflows
For SAICA members, CPD has moved beyond attendance tracking towards demonstrable competence and reflective growth. AI-supported CPD supports transformation and access by lowering barriers to personalised, high-quality learning across diverse professional contexts.
ETHICS, GOVERNANCE, AND PROFESSIONAL JUDGEMENT
The adoption of AI in professional education raises legitimate ethical and governance concerns. Issues of academic integrity, data privacy, algorithmic bias, and over-reliance on automated outputs must be carefully managed. Even personalised learning may have
limitations if these concerns are not well managed
From a SAICA perspective, the response should not be resistance, but responsible stewardship. As a professional body, SAICA is playing a critical role in:
Establishing ethical guidelines for AI use (including around professional integrity, attribution,
and judgement)
Ensuring AI enhances − rather than erodes − professional scepticism, judgement and
accountability
Providing research, thought leadership and foresight on the future of the profession in the
advent of AI and other technologies
Crucially, AI must be positioned as a decision-support tool, not a substitute for professional competence and judgement. This distinction is foundational to preserving the integrity of the CA(SA) designation.
IMPLICATIONS FOR EDUCATORS, TRAINING OFFICERS, AND THE PROFESSION
The shift towards AI-enabled learning ecosystems has practical implications across the professional education pipeline:
Accounting educators must rethink curriculum design, assessment strategies, and learning support, embedding AI in ways that promote critical thinking.
Training officers can leverage AI to monitor trainee progress, personalise workplace learning, and support reflective practice during training contracts.
Professional leaders and SAICA must continue to provide strategic direction, guidance, and support, to ensure innovation serves public interest and meets professional standards.
Failure to engage meaningfully with AI and integrating it effectively in the professional education ecosystem risks inefficiency in processes, stagnation and irrelevance.
CONCLUSION: STEWARDING THE FUTURE OF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
AI is reshaping the learning landscape, but its impact will be determined not by technology alone, but by the values and intentions that guide its use. For the CA(SA) profession, AI presents an opportunity to reimagine education as a living ecosystem of continuous growth, reflection, and ethical practice.
By grounding AI adoption in professional education in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and by aligning it with SAICA’s competency framework and professional values, the profession can ensure that technological innovation strengthens − rather than diminishes − public trust in both the profession and the integration of AI.
The challenge before us is not whether AI will shape professional learning but whether we will actively steward that transformation in service of competence, integrity, and lifelong professional excellence.
Reflecting on SA creation and ingenuity
The integration of AI into learning and development offers South Africa a unique opportunity to position itself as a creator, not merely a consumer, within the global AI ecosystem. Local educators, creators, innovators and entrepreneurs ought to integrate AI in designing their learning environments, personalised CPD pathways, and evidence-informed educational practices. South Africans can pioneer models that reflect our own values and socio-economic realities.
It is critical that we move beyond importing technology to shaping it. In doing so, South Africa will assert its ingenuity by crafting solutions that not only serve local needs but also contribute thought leadership to the global discourse on professional learning and development in the age of AI.
The challenge and opportunity lie in embracing AI as a tool for innovation, ensuring that our frameworks and practices become benchmarks for others rather than replicas of external and global systems.
