It has truly been a significant season for South Africans as we commemorate 30 years of democracy. With the seventh election done and dusted, as a nation we were all holding our breath to hear the final election results. Some of us are surprised, some not.
But despite who we each cast our vote for on 29 May 2024, ultimately as citizens of this beautiful country we all hold the same dream in our hearts for South Africa. We have high hopes for a country where we see the inequality gap closing, no crime, and jobs for everyone (and of, course fewer potholes …).
A saying that comes to mind as I write this is ‘be the change you want to see’, and as clichéd as it may sound, it’s true. In our sphere of influence, wherever it may be, or however small it may be, let us be proactive and create the environment we envision for South Africa by being change agents where we are.
With Youth Day just around the corner, we encourage everyone to ‘adopt a youngster’. Take them under your wing, mentor them, build them up with word of encouragement and affirmation – let them hear the words ‘You can do it!’ and watch them flourish. Most young people are qualified but unemployed because they don’t have the necessary experience required to get a proper job. So, if you have the capacity to make a difference in this space, please do so. It may take some effort, but you will be left feeling fulfilled.
On the cover this month we feature four incredible individuals who have overcome tremendous obstacles. Jameel Khan fought a battle against drugs, has overcome, and is ow who works at The Unconventional CA mentoring entrepreneurs. To date they have mentored 578 SMMEs. And then there is Liana Moolman, CFO of the Road Traffic Management Corporation, a young woman who has literally shortened the tediously, long queues at the licensing department so you can be in and out in 10 minutes. She has also worked on a number of other initiatives, as well as being involved in updating the curriculum and qualification for the training of traffic officers.
It is a great encouragement to read about the great things these guys are doing. So, let’s stop waiting for the government to make South Africa a better place: let’s start being the catalysts to change ourselves. We can do it!
