Nestled in the historic town of Tulbagh, Theuniskraal stands as a testament to the art of winemaking, with roots as deep and storied as the town itself. This esteemed estate, a jewel in South Africa’s winemaking crown, has been with the Jordaan family since 1927, cultivating a heritage of viticulture that spans generations. It's not just a wine farm; it's a family legacy that thrives under the stewardship of the third generation, with an unwavering commitment to quality and tradition.
Theuniskraal’s narrative is interwoven with that of the South African wine industry, rising to prominence with its award-winning Cape Riesling in 1948 and expanding its vineyard to about 350 hectares of trellised vines. Their Shiraz 2020, a gold medalist at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge, exemplifies their dedication to excellence. But what truly sets Theuniskraal apart is its understanding that the soul of its wine lies in the unique rocky, sandy loam soils of its land, which yields wines rich in flavor and structure.
We uncork the history of Theuniskraal, explore the intricate winemaking process, and share insights from Andries Jordaan Jnr., the winemaker, who brings to life the passion, challenges, and aspirations that shape their world-renowned wines. From their storied past to their innovative future, we celebrate the essence of Theuniskraal—a tale of terroir, tradition, and the tireless pursuit of the perfect bottle.
Tell us a bit about the history of Theuniskraal.
Theuniskraal’s history is as rich as its soil. Established in 1705 and originally named Theuniskuyl, it was later christened Theuniskraal. My family, starting with my grandmother Helena Deborha Jordaan, has been nurturing this land since 1927. The third generation, myself included, now oversees our operations. Our legacy truly began to flourish when my grandfather, Andries Wagner Jordaan, partnered with Dr. Anton Rupert in the 1940s, catalyzing a renaissance in South African winemaking.
What influence does the type of soil have on the produce?
Our rocky, sandy loam soils are a viticulturist’s dream. They provide excellent drainage, aeration, and a cool substrate for our vines. This translates into wines that are robust in flavor and structure—distinctive qualities that can only come from our particular terroir.
How did you get started at Theuniskraal?
I was born into it. Theuniskraal is more than a winery—it’s my childhood playground. After serving in the national service and studying Wine and Viticulture at Stellenbosch University, I honed my craft in California before returning to our family estate.
What is the best compliment you’ve received in winemaking?
It’s always the unexpected accolades that resonate most. Whether it’s a German wine writer equating our Riesling with the finest from their homeland or a French connoisseur lauding our red blend as among the best, these moments underscore the universal language of quality wine.
What you admire most about South African wine?
It’s the diversity and excellence. South Africa’s array of soils and climates yields a fascinating spectrum of wine profiles, each with its own story and flavor palette.
What is the most challenging part of harvest/wine making?
Consistency is our Holy Grail. Achieving the same level of quality and style year after year, despite nature’s variability, is our enduring challenge—and passion.
What is your favourite wine and why?
I have a soft spot for dry whites—Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and our very own Cape Riesling. They are refreshing, versatile, and, in a way, they speak to our South African identity and lifestyle.
What you enjoy most about winemaking?
It’s the entire journey—from planting a vine to pouring the wine. There’s a profound sense of fulfillment in guiding this process, in watching a simple grape transform into a complex beverage that brings people together.
What goals do you still wish to achieve?
My vision is to see Theuniskraal’s wines achieve even greater success. We’re constantly striving for higher quality and considering expanding our range to include sparkling wines.
What makes the wines of Theuniskraal different?
It’s the combination of value, variety, and our unwavering commitment to the craft. We offer wines that cater to a spectrum of tastes, all with the hallmark of Theuniskraal quality.
In every bottle of Theuniskraal, there lies a story, a tradition, and a promise of quality that has been upheld for nearly a century. Through the eyes of Andries Jordaan Jnr., we’ve glimpsed the dedication and love that goes into every harvest, blending tradition and innovation to create wines that are truly South African at heart.
