This October issue of Accountancy South Africa (ASA) carries special significance for me as I step into the role of editor. It is both a privilege and a responsibility to take forward a publication that has been shaped with care, vision, and commitment by those who came before me. In particular, I would like to acknowledge Lynn Grala, who has dedicated more than a decade of service to SAICA. Her leadership, creativity, and dedication to storytelling have elevated ASA into a platform of trusted insight and relevance. I am grateful for the foundation that she has helped lay, and I step into this role with both humility and excitement for what lies ahead.
October is also Ethics Month, reminding us that ethics is not just a concept, but the compass of our profession. Ethics is what builds trust, safeguards reputations, and shapes leaders who make a meaningful difference. This issue reflects that spirit — showing how our members live out ethics, diversity, and leadership in tangible ways.
On our cover, we feature Taryn Woodbridge, Chief Financial Officer of Mercedes-Benz South Africa. As the first South African to hold this role, her story is one of grit, adaptability, and courage; proof that what she calls the “invisible CV” of values and integrity matters as much as the technical skills on paper. Her leadership demonstrates how inclusion and ethics together create lasting progress.
We also meet Zamashenge “Zama” Buthelezi CA(SA), whose story epitomises our theme: Choosing ethics, choosing impact. At just 26, Zama has already inspired many — from tutoring high school learners to lecturing auditing students at Milpark Education. Her path was not without setbacks but was steadily driven by resilience and a strong “why.” Today she mentors the next generation, reminding them that ethics is not an abstract concept but a daily choice. Her words resonate: “Ethics is the choice to do the right thing even when no one is watching”.
This issue further expands on the global reach of our members, such as Montague Swanepoel CA(SA), founder of CFO360, who shares lessons from building a sustainable business environment in the United States. His reflections remind us that adaptability and values-driven choices are at the heart of long-term success.
Together, these stories remind us that ethics, DEI, and leadership are not distant ideals. They are alive in the resilience of our members, the courage of their decisions, and the impact of their actions.
As I take up this new chapter, I remain mindful of the women who shaped me; my late grandmother, my mother, and the many incredible women who have supported me throughout my career. Making my editorial debut in Ethics Month feels like a full-circle moment, one rooted in gratitude and purpose.
I look forward to walking this journey with you — telling stories that matter, amplifying voices that inspire, and ensuring that ASA continues to be a trusted companion to you, our valued members and associates, donors, sponsors, contributors, staff, students, teachers and the profession at large.
In pursuit of meaningful impact,
Kgauhelo Dioka
