Leading in 2030
As the business landscape is changing, the way you lead is also evolving, and future leaders will undoubtedly need to possess new skills and mindsets to lead effectively.
Jacob Morgan, author of The Future Leader, interviewed more than 140 Top CEOs from leading companies to gain insights into the mindsets and skills that future leaders need to master:
Mindsets:
- Global Citizen – This is to have a mindset that thinks globally and embraces diversity. Your company’s ethos and culture must reflect this to enter and succeed in new global markets.
- Servant – This mindset goes against much of the old way of thinking that says leaders stay at the company’s top. Instead, a servant mindset means that leaders practice humility and serve four groups: their leaders, customers, team, and themselves.
- Chef – Balancing different ingredients to create masterful meals – leaders must also balance the two most essential ingredients in any business: humanity and technology. While using technology to improve efficiency, there is a sense of purpose and care provided for employees.
- Explorer – Future leaders need to embrace the unknown, be open to new ideas, and be willing to change the course as the world around them evolves.
Skills:
- Coach – Great coaches inspire their teams while caring about them as individuals. Likewise, future leaders need to treat employees as individuals and not view them just as workers.
- Futurists – They make sure that companies are not surprised by what the future might bring. There is constant change around us, but futurists consider different scenarios and think through new possibilities. They stay on top of trends and are connected to their networks.
- Technology teenager – Like teenagers that are always on to the latest technology, future leaders need to be the same. They don’t need to be experts but should know how technology can be used to serve the company.
- Translator – They are master communicators and listen to understand more than hear what people are saying. They know how to connect with people and what channels to use to deliver messages effectively.
- Yoda – Future leaders need to be emotionally intelligent like Yoda and develop their empathy and self-awareness. As a result, they build great connections and are not afraid to be vulnerable.
This month we also introduce you to our Top 35-under-35 winners, and we hope that knowing these youngsters are in fact our future leaders will give you peace of mind. They lead with courage, and like Aristotle said: ‘You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honour.’
