I think we’re all on the same page … let the holidays begin! It seems 2024 has flown at the speed of light; and reflecting on it, it is astounding how bumper-packed it was.
As you flip through this month’s issue (and past issues), there are many proud moments and phenomenal people to celebrate. And it has ended on a high note, with the SAICA Awards Week being the grand finale encapsulating the Trainee Trailblazer, Top 35-under-35 and SAICA Chairman’s awards.
The SAICA Chairman’s Award evening was an emotional and exhilarating experience that culminated with Nonkululeko Gobodo receiving the Chairman’s Legacy Lifetime Award. Her story brought tears to many. Throughout her career she has received numerous awards, but it was endearing to hear her say that ‘this one stands out because the recognition comes from my peers in the profession’. Read about her fight against fear to achieve her dreams, wisdom for youth and adoption of technology on page 16.
Social activist Khethiwe Nene received the Trainee Trailblazer Award in recognition for her fight against gender-based violence. As young as she is, she is making a difference and is excited to officially launch EduCare, a programme which will equip GBV victims with the skills to become financially stable – which, in turn, will aid them to break free from the toxic cycle of victimisation.
And who would dream that The Audit Toolbar struck while Christiaan Coetzee CA(SA) was on a three-month ‘sabbatical’ in Bali. A problem-solver of note, Christiaan received the Top 35-under-35 Overall Winner Award for innovatively turning the tool that most accountants use 75% of their time and turbo-boosting it to save a whole 35 hours of work. (Did Christiaan say beaches of Bali? I’m taking cue …)
It is known that many people have their ‘light-bulb’ moments for some ground-breaking solution or business idea when they are relaxing and doing something mundane. On page 56, read what clinical psychologist Mandy Rodrigues has to say about the importance of recharging this festive season.
So, don’t underestimate the value and power of switching off during the holidays and doing fun things that will feed your soul, like stringing up the Christmas lights and decorating cookies. I think I’m going to take out my paint brushes to illustrate my own Christmas cards …
Wishing you all a wonderful festive season!
