With the focus being on ethics this month, my mind rambled back into the past to a memory of when I turned 16 and one of my high school teachers gave me a little book filled with various quotes of wisdom. Sadly, I heard she passed away a few years ago from cancer, but the encouragement and time invested in her students will live on forever − and of course, those book quotes. One specific quote I remember reading was ‘if you take care of your character, your reputation will take care of itself’.
Yes, character is what we do when we think no one is looking! They are all those decisions that we make each day that add up. They say good character is not formed in a week or a month: it is created little by little day by day. The incredible thing is when we do the right thing, it most often has a ripple effect and benefits not only you, but countless others. May we all continue to strive to do the right thing.
It always amazes me how some people just happen to find their niche in life. Imre Nagy, CEO of the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors, has certainly found his! He is passionate about auditing, and being guided with a strong sense of integrity from a young age, his heart is invested in making a difference for the profession. Since taking up office as CEO, they have achieved clean audits three years in a row, and he has been working tirelessly to address the tarnished perception of the industry. You can read more about his recent achievements at the IRBA in the cover story.
This month we also take a look at mental health. It’s a complicated topic and so many silently struggle or may feel ashamed because they struggle with mental health issues and might not have the support they need. If you do struggle with anxiety, stress or depression, we encourage you to seek some kind of support. Rochelle Murugan, who tragically lost her mother to suicide, says, ‘It’s important and healthy to seek help from a therapist when needed − just as one would hire a personal trainer if you needed one!’
