Matsilele Promise CA(SA) started her career journey in 2018 at KPMG Polokwane as a trainee. She then moved on to become an associate at PwC where she completed her training contract and worked as an audit manager.
Matsilele’s journey took a spicy turn when she joined Nando’s South Africa as a financial accountant. She is now the Statutory Finance Manager and shares some insights with us.
Why did you choose to join Nando’s?
I was eager to seize the opportunity because I knew Nando’s to be a proudly South African brand that is renowned globally. After my first interview, I got the sense that Nando’s values aren’t merely lip service but are genuinely embodied. I have since come to respect and love the brand even more.
What do you enjoy most about working for a brand like Nando’s?
The Nando’s brand is intricately linked to its people, and the people I work with are fired up and very passionate, and this environment cultivates their passion. The excellence at Nando’s inspires me and challenges me to always show up as my best self.
What was important for you when choosing CA(SA) as a career?
I would like to think that I did not choose the CA(SA) route but that it chose me, and I could not be gladder. I do not have the words to express how the journey and designation have transformed my life. Since embarking on this journey, the most important thing I have come to appreciate is the opportunity to create value in business by tackling complex financial problems.
What would you say is the best thing about being a CA(SA)?
The designation has changed my life completely. It has granted me access to rooms and conversations that would have otherwise been inaccessible. The career progression has been amazing, and the financial freedom that comes with it has allowed me also to impact the lives of people around me. Moreover, it has given me a platform to make a change with little consequence.
Your thoughts on ethics?
Ethics are an anchor, they keep us grounded in our values. When I think of ethics, I remember the saying that if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything. Ethics are crucial in building trust, fostering positive relationships, and contributing to the greater good. They also challenge us to think about how our daily actions whether small or big will impact others. It is important to do regular ethics check-ins to determine whether one is up to date since we live in a fast-paced world where new ethical dilemmas always arise.
Your thoughts on the CA(SA) designation being the number one trusted designation?
This means that potential employers, business partners, and governments will have more confidence in having CAs(SA) as allies in solving societal problems. I am proud to be a part of this prestigious group of individuals. I am also proud of SAICA’s work in ensuring that we always stay on top.
