In a world filled with adversity and opportunities, the story of Nomalungelo Mkhize CA(SA) stands as an inspiring testament to the power of education, determination, and unwavering resilience. Her journey is a powerful example of how a combination of personal drive, familial support, and a passion for learning can lead to remarkable success.
EARLY BEGINNINGS
Nomalungelo Mkhize was born into a nurturing extended family environment in South Africa. Her mother and grandmother, her primary caregivers, instilled in her the values of education and the importance of hard work from a young age. ‘My upbringing was in a modest household, and my mother and grandmother made great sacrifices to provide me with the best opportunities.’
Her academic journey began in a mission school, where she received a solid foundation. However, a significant turning point occurred when she was considered for enrollment into a multiracial school in Grade 6, in 1992. This transition broadened her horizons and exposed her to a more diverse and enriching educational experience.
PASSION FOR ACCOUNTING
While teaching held a certain appeal for Nomalungelo, her introduction to accounting during high school opened up a new world of possibilities. ‘I developed a genuine passion for the subject and excelled in it. It was during this period that I became aware of the CA(SA) qualification and its potential.’
Economic factors also played a role in Nomalungelo’s decision. The promise of greater financial stability, compared to teaching, was a compelling factor given their modest background. Moreover, she was drawn to the challenge posed by the CA(SA) journey, particularly its reputation as a demanding career with a limited representation of African black professionals. She aspired to be part of the movement to increase diversity in the field.
EDUCATIONAL PURSUITS
Nomalungelo pursued her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at what was then known as the University of Natal, now the University of KwaZulu-Natal, at the Pietermaritzburg campus. She successfully completed her tertiary studies in 2002, setting the stage for her career. ‘My professional journey led me to Deloitte in KwaZulu-Natal, where I completed my training and earned my CA(SA) designation in April 2006.’
This accomplishment marked a significant milestone in her journey.
RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF CHALLENGES
The road to becoming a qualified CA(SA) was not without its challenges. Nomalungelo vividly recalls a pivotal moment during her academic journey when she had to confront a significant setback. It was during her final year at university while pursuing her Bachelor of Commerce honours degree (CTA) that she found herself in a situation she had never encountered before.
‘Despite the emotional toll, I had to make a decision – either give up or face the challenge head-on. I chose to retake the exams, pushing past my fears and doubts. Little did I know that this experience would serve as my introduction to lessons on overcoming the fear of failure, self-motivation, and using setbacks as opportunities for personal growth.’
She had to retake exams for three of the Big Four modules. This was a profound test of her resilience and determination, especially considering that her studies had been supported by a bursary since her second year.
This experience forced Nomalungelo to grapple with the concept of failure and how it was affecting her self-perception and self-worth.
Throughout her journey to becoming a CA(SA), Nomalungelo made three attempts to pass part one of the board exams (now known as the Initial Test of Competence), before succeeding on the third attempt.
‘These experiences taught me valuable lessons about introspection, resilience, focus, and the importance of maintaining a clear vision of my ultimate goals. My hope is that all young people with a similar experience remember this and not be discouraged by failure.’
LEADING WITH PASSION AND PURPOSE
As a business unit leader at the Auditor-General of South Africa for the KwaZulu-Natal office, Nomalungelo is responsible for overseeing all audits conducted within KwaZulu-Natal. She manages a staff complement of over 240 in the business unit.
‘One of my deepest passions is the development of young people – guiding and motivating them to harness their potential and achieve their aspirations is a source of great fulfilment for me.’
She seizes every opportunity to share her personal journey toward becoming a CA(SA) to inspire and motivate individuals pursuing this prestigious designation. ’My career within the public sector and my current role at the Auditor-General’s office have afforded me the chance to positively impact the culture within the public sector.’
She is committed to contributing to the solutions needed to address the challenges facing the country. Her efforts are focused on making a difference in South Africa, not just for her generation but for future generations, including her children and their descendants.
EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP
Nomalungelo’s exceptional leadership qualities have not gone unnoticed. Colleagues describe her as someone with a different perspective on leadership – not only leading with a strategic mindset but with integrity and heart. Her perspective on leadership has evolved over the years. Leadership, to her, was once associated with positions of authority and power. However, her experiences in various leadership roles have reshaped her understanding of what effective leadership entails.
She has learnt that leadership is all about collaboration – bringing together the right people to form a team capable of co-creating solutions to organisational challenges and achieving shared goals. It is about inspiring and motivating the teams she leads.
‘Authenticity is a cornerstone of exceptional leadership. Qualities such as integrity, honesty and accountability are of paramount importance. Leading by example, selflessness and empathy are also qualities that distinguish exceptional leaders. I do believe that in the present day, these qualities are most important.’
LEAVING A LEGACY
For Nomalungelo, the path to becoming a CA(SA) has been transformative. She is dedicated to contributing to the profession and her country. Her ultimate goal is to leave a lasting, positive impact on future generations and inspire others to achieve their aspirations. Her story is a beacon of hope, resilience, and leadership that lights the path for all who dare to dream big and work hard to turn their dreams into reality.
Nomalungelo Mkhize’s journey serves as a reminder that with determination, support from loved ones, and a commitment to excellence, individuals can achieve their goals and make a lasting impact on their communities and the world. Her story is a testament to the power of education, perseverance, and a belief in oneself to overcome challenges and emerge as a leader and a role model for others to follow.
