What image do the words ‘chartered accountant’ conjure up?
I immediately think of a business leader, a sound decision-maker, a visionary and an entrepreneur who is a catalyst for sustainable positive change and industry innovation. I imagine an individual who can operate in any business environment around the world and who can perform at the highest levels of perceived pressure and stress like it is just another walk in the park. To me, these qualities epitomise the essence of a chartered accountant.
I think the world agrees too.
The ranking of #1 in the world as the most trustworthy chartered accountancy brand this year is a testament to the high calibre of our membership, being high-impact professionals with drive, grit, technical competence and sound leadership skills who serve as a pillar of strength in the business world. This is further demonstrated by the inspirational achievements of our fellow members who have decided to showcase their impact in the 2023 SAICA Top 35-under-35 competition.
It is these characteristics that we as CAs(SA) possess (that is similar to what our beloved Bokke demonstrated in the Rugby World Cup this year, as they were able to maintain their cool in the face of sheer adversity and rise to the occasion − thereby becoming champions) that allows us to serve as trusted advisors in business.
These qualities are cultivated over time. The countless hours spent studying teach you to focus and lay the foundation of your technical knowledge The exams with their tight writing time teach you to work well under pressure. In articles, you will face tight deadlines whilst juggling multiple projects. These experiences are all there to prime you to become a confident, capable and trusted business leader.
Remember, a diamond is forged under the process of intense heat and pressure. The same applies to your CA(SA) journey. It will be tough, but your training will allow you to maintain your cool in the highest-pressure situations to the extent that when you are qualified, people will look to you for business leadership. People will see you as a mentor and they will be inspired by your journey.
These are the characteristics of a CA(SA). We develop, influence and lead.
Keep moving forward on your journey dear reader! Every bit of hard work is worth it in the end!
Find a mentor
There is always a way to make your CA(SA) journey easier. Find yourself a mentor. Whether you are a student or in articles, there is always somebody a little further along your journey. Why not reach out to them, schedule a meeting and then ask for their guidance? They have a lot of experience that could potentially help you work smarter as opposed to harder. I am yet to meet a mentor who has refused anyone mentorship. Perhaps finding a mentor is the key to unlocking your potential.
