Neil de Kock’s mother is a retired CA(SA) and his dad studied law, so he says he was destined to study BAcc LLB. During his undergrad, he had many intriguing conversations with his mom, Elsa de Kock, where she shared interesting anecdotes from her career which were a great inspiration to him as well as to one day make a positive difference as a CA(SA). And of course, Elsa is super proud that her son made it to the 2023 Top 10 APC candidate list.
Neil, what are some of the things you appreciate and value most about your mom?
My mom always makes time for her family. Whether to have a chat about your day, wish you luck for a test, or send you a food parcel from home, my mom has always made the time and walked the extra mile. She is pragmatic and has a no-nonsense approach to life yet is also immensely loving with a sensitive and kind heart.
Elsa, your son made it to the Top 10 APC candidates? Apparently you were a little stressed on his behalf … How do you feel about him passing so well?
Neil’s journey to the Top 10 APC candidates was quite the nail-biter for me. The pressure of such a rigorous exam weighed heavily, but deep down, I had faith in his unwavering dedication and work ethic. His stellar performance is a testament to his resilience and potential to make a meaningful impact in the world. I’m truly relieved and immensely proud of his achievement.
Neil, how did you feel about being a Top 10 APC candidate? And what do you think contributed to passing so well?
I felt utter disbelief. I refused to celebrate until I called our HR manager to confirm that the Neil de Kock on the honours roll list was truly me. Once I received confirmation, I jumped up and down for joy and gratitude!
I think my time as an academic trainee taught me how to package information and convey it in a way that is professional yet easy to understand.
Neil, what are some of your aspirations and dreams for the future?
I aspire to enter a space where I am challenged and on the steep end of the learning curve. My short-term goal is to gain as much exposure to different industries and gain a better understanding of how value is created. Ultimately, I hope that the knowledge gained will allow me to identify opportunities in the market and join or start an entrepreneurial venture!
Elsa, please share your career as a CA(SA) and the most valuable lessons learnt?
My career path as a CA(SA) has been rich with many experiences. During my articles at Ernst and Young in Johannesburg, I absorbed practical insights alongside exceptional colleagues and clients. Transitioning to roles like financial director at Linatex South Africa and later heading compliance, internal audit and risk at Citadel Investment Services taught me countless lessons. Among them, the paramount one was developing and trusting my intuition. Whenever I sensed a potential issue, I proactively investigated, often averting larger problems.
What advice do you give other young moms raising sons?
The journey begins with unconditional love and discovering each child’s unique strengths. During both my sons’ formative years I was fortunate to work mornings only, allowing me to be present for them after school. This balance proved invaluable, and I highly recommend it to other moms whenever feasible. Being there for your children, nurturing their growth, and fostering their independence is a rewarding journey that shapes both them and you.
Neil, how are you going to spoil your mom for Mother’s Day?
I am going to call her in the morning and tell her how much I appreciate and love her!
If she happens to be in Cape Town on the day, I would love to take her for a drive up Chapman’s Peak, which I know to be one of her favourite places.
