Refilwe Matenche is the founder and president of the African Women Movement (AWM) empowering women across Africa. But on the forefront of her agenda, and closest to her heart, is her nine-year-old daughter, Khazimula Matenche. Watching her personality, skills, knowledge, and talents expand brings Refilwe immense joy, and experiencing the world through her eyes brings a fresh perspective and adds joy to everyday moments.
Khazimula, what do you love most about your mom?
I appreciate that my mom is always there for me, helping me in everything I do. She also helps me with my maths and supports me to with my favourite extramurals: piano, ballet and netball.
Refilwe, please briefly share your current job?
I am the founder and president of the African Women Movement (AWM), an organisation dedicated to economically empowering women across Africa through mentorship programmes, skill development workshops, and advocacy for gender equality. Additionally, I run Thendo Advisory, a boutique consulting firm focusing on business strategy and helping women-owned businesses achieve their goals.
How do you juggle being a mom and your career?
Balancing motherhood and a career requires effective time management. I follow a robust weekly planning system inspired by 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, prioritising time for family, business and self-care. Support from family, friends, and colleagues is invaluable in maintaining a healthy work/life balance.
What are your favourite activities to do together?
We enjoy travelling, swimming, biking, and watching movies. We also cook some meals together and engage in creative arts and crafts, strengthening our bond and creating lasting memories.
Refilwe, what are the most valuable attributes you try to instil in your daughter?
The belief that she can pursue her passions and work smartly to achieve her goals. Resilience, empathy, perseverance, and setting age-appropriate personal goals are key qualities I’m currently instilling in her.
What advice do you wish to give other moms?
Remember that your personal best is enough, prioritise self-care, and cherish every moment with your children. Seek support when needed and trust in your abilities as a mom.
Would you encourage your daughter to pursue a career as a CA(SA)? Why?
I would encourage my daughter to pursue any career aligned with her interests and strengths. What’s important to me is for my daughter to find fulfilment and passion in whatever life’s work she ends up in.
Refilwe, what do you love most about your mom?
I cherish my mom’s unwavering love and support. During a time when my confidence was low and I was uncertain about my future during high school, she encouraged me to pursue my dreams and guided me to a fulfilling career in chartered accountancy.
Khazimula, what have you planned to do with your mom for Mother’s Day?
I have planned a day that starts with breakfast in bed and surprising my mom with chocolates and a card I will make specially for her.
