Annie McWalter, CEO of The Hope Factory and SAICA Enterprise Development, reflects on the positive impact they had in 2023.

At the beginning of 2023, we had set ourselves the objective to continue to impact various communities throughout South Africa positively through small business development and the creation of new jobs in the South African economy. Through our diverse offerings within the Socio-economic Development, Skills Development and Enterprise Supplier Development categories, we have been fortunate to work with some of the country’s largest organisations in the mining, renewable energy and ICT sectors.
It is encouraging to witness some of the country’s biggest contributors to the economy prioritise Enterprise and Supplier Development and Skills Development as strategic transformational pillars to achieve their respective objectives. Through B-BBEE, corporate South Africa has the ideal opportunity to build more sustainable businesses and play a greater role in socio-economic transformation.
Around the world, investment and improvements to local economies is a highly regarded business value that ensures profitability and economic success for everyone. For example, a focused approach to building sustainable small businesses through enterprise development programmes contributes greatly to this kind of transformation in South Africa, and we believe that our Financial Excellence Offering model, together with our skills development approach, has continued to prove successful according to our latest impact statistics.
This year we have seen an increase in job creation through developing customised financial excellence programmes for entrepreneurs and SMMEs (small, medium and micro enterprises). Several corporates have indicated an interest in our skills development and socio-economic development initiatives.
We continue to partner within the renewable energy industry by attaining a key new client in the energy sector to support over 30 SMMEs with a programme that will focus on a financial excellence offering (FEO) which will involve a combination of business and finance development (mentorship) support and the development of quality financial records. We are also in the process of renewing our ongoing relationship with one of our key clients in the mining industry.
Our Sage agreement to grant free Sage licences for our SMMEs has commenced and we have been well underway over the last couple of months. Empowering the youth has always been part of our DNA, as we continue to provide nine unemployed graduates with opportunities to gain work experience at different organisations through the YES programme initiative.
Since the beginning of the year, we have managed to support 554 SMMEs through our various flagship, customised and skills development projects. We currently have over 50 SAICA member-associated small-medium practices (SMPs) in Accounting with whom we partner to support our programmes. In addition, a total of 53 volunteers from KPMG and independent SAICA members have contributed to our programmes as volunteer coaches and mentors to our SMMEs on the various flagship programmes. Over 80 industry experts have participated in our operations and have been very supportive in giving us feedback to enhance our customised offering for current industry needs.
The organisation’s resilience and agility were truly tested this year through several lessons learnt from the previous years. The need to continuously innovate and refocus our customised offering in order to keep relevant to the current needs of our industry has certainly proved to be a success in this year’s output.
Our passion for people to develop key entrepreneurial skills through our socio-economic development and skills development initiatives and various projects in our enterprise and supplier development fraternity remains the key foci of The Hope Factory and SAICA Enterprise Development in 2024. Our integration and the influence of our governing body, SAICA, have been influential in our positioning of being difference makers in the context of SMME development in South Africa.
